The high and the mighty
By it's very nature the dockside crane has always stood aloof and remote from the casual observer. Volume 3 of Cranes & Excavators At Work gives an exciting look at these giants of the workplace. Filmed as never before their various features are discussed in depth as the viewer is shown just how big they really are when seen from close quarters. Featuring a number of Stothert & Pitt cranes and a Ruston Bucyrus 61-RB, we Inspect their machinery decks and enjoy a drivers eye view from high up in their lofty cabs as they offload grain and coal onto the quayside together with coils which are picked up by 16 ton fork lift trucks for transporting to the warehouse. Sometimes these giants of the wharf have to be moved to a new site and we are lucky enough to see just such an operation under way with the Liverpool based 'Mersey Mammouth' floating crane lifting a dock crane weighing 127 Ton off the quayside with no bother at all. A Tour of this 1800 Ton floating monster is also undertaken, visiting the winding house and the engine room below decks to see the two magnificent one thousand H.P. Ruston type diesel engines.
