How To Run a Lathe 1942 by South Bend Lathe Works

No Longer Available

South Bend Lathe still produces a modern edition of this book and will sell it to you at a price much higher than this one. This 1942 edition has been reprinted because the copyrights have expired. It's new enough to be very similar to the current edition, and yet old enough to be applicable to a lot of the older lathes still in use. Bench lathes have not changed much in decades.

This is the lathe manual that Dave Gingery raves about. You get everything you could need to set up a lathe and get it running.

You get eleven chapters:

  1. history and development of the lathe
  2. setting up and leveling the lathe
  3. operation of the lathe
  4. lathe tools and their application
  5. how to take accurate measurements
  6. plane turning (work between centers)
  7. chuck work
  8. taper turning and boring
  9. drilling reaming and tapping
  10. cutting screw threads
  11. special classes of work.

All the basics are here from sharpening drills so you can centre drill to "super finished" turned bearings, grinding valves, and turning multiple screw threads. Remember, this is an introductory guide that was no doubt shipped with South Bend Lathes back then. Under no circumstances are you going to learn what is covered in "Advanced Machine Works". This will get you going. And if you're just learning to use a lathe you have to have a copy of this or something very similar.

This isn't the current edition. In fact belt driving the lathe is still covered. But it's completely useful. A great book with great illustrations.
