The significance of the Sunbeam 12 - 16 H.P; in the motoring scene before the First World War cannot be overstated. Initially as a 2.4-litre and later as a full 3-litre, the simple 4-cylinder design by the talented Frenchman Louis Coatalen found its way into almost every aspect of motoring life. Whether as a touring, sports or racing car, a commercial vehicle or ambulance in civilian life or as workhorse and saviour to those at war, the 12 - 16's reputation for excellence was envied by all other car makers and persists today.
Production amounted to a little less than 5,000 units spanning the period from late 1909 to late 1914, with about 70 known to survive and most highly thought of by owners and knowledgeable onlookers alike.
Here is a mostly pictorial story of this illustrious model.
