This book is a new printing of the two volumes of George Watkins classic work combined in one book. It consists of over 150 plates of stationary steam engines, most of which were still in operation when the photos were take. There are specification and brief histories of each of the engine.

George Watkins (1904-1989) was a remarkable man, steam engines were his passion. He built up an unparalleled collection of photographs and notes about these engines between the 1930's and the 1970's. His collection of around 1500 mounted prints, and his notebooks with almost 2000 entries, along with other records are kept in the national Monuments Record.

This book has been compiled from his extensive collection of photos and notes, and shows the most important and significant examples of stationary steam engines in Britain. The book is a comprehensive overview of the whole range of engine types from the earliest Newcomen-style pumping machines to the most sophisticated reciprocating engines. It presents consecutively, illustrations of all the main variations of the non-locomotive steam engines.
