This is the first comprehensive work on the Ohio River and Western Railway. The narrow-gauge road that evolved into the Ohio River and Western was incorporated in 1875 and made its last run in 1931. During that half-century, the OR&W, like so many narrow gauge railroads, saw a little bit of boom and a whole lot of bust.
Built in a burst of optimistic enthusiasm, the OR&W Railway struggled through most of its existence. In the end, the OR&W simply could not compete with its powerful, standard gauge counterparts: the Baltimore & Ohio and the Pennsylvania Railroads.
