This is a semi-autobiographical book that traces the activities of Reg Sprigg and his company Geosurveys of Australia Pty Ltd. Written in a colourful style, it provides good reading to any one interested in Australia's outback.
Reg left the security of the South Australian Mines Department to start a geological consultancy company in 1954. For the next 40 years he and his company had been active in understanding the geology of Australia.
His early work included a uranium mine, oil exploration work for SANTOS, he was one of the first to explore the Simpson desert with places like Geosurveys Hill being named by his company. He did some nickel exploration, and there is also some interesting comments on Lasseter's Reef.
Not all the work was done in the outback, some exploration work was also done in Victoria with the development of the Port Campbell gas field. There was the conversion of an old steam boiler to a diving bell for use in offshore geological surveys.
There is also mention on how flying windmills helped to establish the Arkaroola Windmill Museum.
