This is a collection of choice construction articles from The American Electrician. There are thirty four chapters, each being a construction article from the magazine prior to 1901.
Fully the first half of the book is about building motors, generators, alternators, and synchronous converters. There is a 1/6 hp motors with a drum armature, and another with a ring armature, also other motors of 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, or 3 hp.
Included are plans for 1, 2, and 4 kilowatt combination AC and DC machines that are designed to be used both as motors and generators. You get plans for a rotary converter: a machine to change AC into DC mechanically.
The second half is better. You get plans for winding a transformer, building a reactive coil, and rheostats. These lessons could be applied to building arc welders, primitive light dimmers and the like.
Learn to make a D'Arsonval, mirror, and Thomson Astatic galvanometer. Build a light meter, a storage battery, an arc lamp, a Nernst lamp, an induction coil, high voltage condenser, Wimshurst machine, dry battery, telephone and more.
